Pattern Review And Some Tips When Making White Garments

One of my end of summer makes has been these Simplicity 8056 pants. This is one of my favorite pants patterns. They are comfortable to wear and I didn’t have to do any alterations to get a good fit. This is also one of those “Amazing Fit” patterns. So, I want to provide a pattern review and some tips when making white garments.

It doesn’t matter whether you are heading into Fall/Autumn and are thinking about winter white or heading into summer.

The Pattern

Simplicity 8056 is a pants pattern with flared leg and shorts. One of the things that I really like about this pattern is the 1″ side seams. While that may seem like a small thing, I really does make fitting the pants that much easier.

The pockets stay flat against the body (just as the envelope states). The waistband sits comfortably on the body.

What I Did

For my pants, I used a stretch cotton sateen in white that I found in my fabric stash. This was one of those pieces that I had completely forgotten about and I really have no idea how long I’ve had it. Unfortunately, I also don’t know where I purchased it from.

Like I said, there weren’t really any alterations to share with you. I have made these before in black and I love them! These are so comfortable, stylish and easy to sew.

As of this writing, the pattern is still available on the Simplicity website even though it’s from 2016.

Tips

As for the sewing tips to share, the big one is how to make your pocket lining unnoticeable. I like to use a fabric for my lining that is close to my skin color. That way it blends in with my skin and isn’t noticeable from the outside. I would guess the same could be done regardless of what your skin tone is. If you were to use white fabric, the pockets would be clearly seen by those looking at you in your snazzy new pants.

I also like to use white thread (or matching thread) when I’m doing any topstitching. I just like the look. The only time that I might do contrast stitching is if I’m making jeans. But as I said, that’s a personal choice.

Conclusion

In any case, I hope you will try this pattern or something like it. It’s a pattern I would rate as intermediate (advanced beginner). The fit is fantastic (or “amazing” for these “Amazing Fit” pants). This is a pattern that can be made from a variety of fabrics in order to give it versatility for different seasons.

Wear White After Labor Day-Absolutely!

As many of you know, we here in the US have just celebrated Labor Day-the unofficial end of summer. The old rule was that after the holiday, you should not wear white again until the next summer. From what I understand, this all started in the 50s among the wealthy. It was considered “refined” to stick to this rule. Well, I am of the belief that you should wear what you want (for the most part). So when it comes to this “fashion rule”, I say wear white after Labor Day-ABSOLUTELY!

Garments I’ve Made

While I don’t buy white and don’t wear it that often (almost every time I do, something’s going to spill 😂), I have made some things that I really love and that fit really well.

  • Morgan Boyfriend jean – this pattern by Closet Core Patterns is a looser fitting jean (more of a straight-leg jean)

  • Simplicity 8056 Amazing Fit – an oldie but goodie in the pattern department. I made these about a week ago.

Wearing these items is great because they are versatile. If you have similar garments in your wardrobe (whether handmade or store bought), consider how they can be mixed and matched with other items you have. In many parts of the country right now, we have been dealing with some serious heat. It’s hard to think about sewing for Fall when the temperatures are in the 90s and above.

Wear White After Labor Day-Absolutely!

I don’t know about you, but I appreciate the freedom of wearing what I want, whatever the season. While it’s always been possible to do so, it’s nice sometimes to actually do it and not feel like the “odd man out”. Hopefully this post will inspire you to keep wearing those things you love throughout the year.

It’s Been A Skort Summer

If you follow me on social media or on YouTube (and you should), you’ve seen the skorts I’ve made so far this summer. I’ve been using Simplicity 9336, with some alterations. I’ve had this pattern for a while, and I can’t believe that it’s taken me so long to try it. These are so comfortable to wear. So for me, it’s been a skort summer!

Pattern Alterations

Like I said, I did make some changes to the pattern, but not until after I had made it mostly as is.

The first thing was to add about 3″ to the length. As you can see from the pattern envelope, the skirt portion is pretty short (at least for me). After making the first one, I made additional changes and plan to do one more alteration. Because the skirt is more straight-line/pencil skirt style, I also made the additional skirts more A-line in style. It works much better for me and the look is smoother.

My Results

The great thing about this pattern is that the shorts fit me perfectly. I made no alterations to that part of the pattern. There is a pocket on the shorts that’s sewn into the side seam. It’s big enough for my phone, but it’s a bit awkward to access.

I guess if you are left-handed, you’d be better off putting the pocket on the left side.

Next, was this green skort made from fabric I purchased locally (this is a similar fabric).

For this particular make, I made the shorts from the same color as the skirt. It is very comfortable and something that’s very easy to wear. The pattern has a separate waistband. Wide can be used which also makes it very comfortable at the waist.

Back S9336

The latest one I made was with this Minerva scuba knit in beige.

The A-line style and the in-seam pockets have made this one a favorite of mine. I eliminated the pocket on the shorts but think I may add it back for the next one. That’ll give me three pockets which is just fine with me! With the alterations, this is similar in style to the Kate skirt I made last year from a ponte knit. Here is my original post about the first one I made (from a non-knit fabric).

Sadly, this pattern is out of print, but if you can get you hands on it (or if you already have it in your pattern stash), I highly recommend it. With or without the changes I made, it is cool and super comfortable to wear. I have fabric for one more of these and it’s still hot enough to get some wear out of it.
