Modified Burda Style Shorts 6812

This is a pattern that I’ve used before, but I made some other modifications in order to get a better fit. About a month ago, I went through all of my patterns. I got rid of some and organized what was remaining (still a lot). I’ve been trying my hand at pattern hacking/altering so that I can get the look and fit I want without having to buy more patterns all the time.

With this pattern, which includes pants, coulottes and shorts, I made View C which is like a “city shorts” or “walking shorts” (at least that’s how we used to refer to these).

While the pattern has front pleats, I removed those and made them flat-front. I didn’t like the way that the pleats add volume where I really don’t want or need it. But I do like how the pattern is very easy to sew. so, rather than finding another pattern, I use this one and changed it. I pleated the pattern, then redrew the front piece as if the pleat was never there (I hope that makes sense).  Here’s the post I wrote about it a while back here

As far as getting a better fit this time, I shortened the crotch seam by about 1/2″, then lengthened the center back seam about 1/2″. The only other change was to use a snap instead of a button.

This is made from a gray polyester suiting I had in my stash. I think I’ll use this pattern in the future to make the pants. This is pretty easy and straightforward in terms of pants-making. Once you get the fit the way you want, it should be easy to make some other changes.

February BurdaStyle Skirt Is Done

As you may know, I’m really trying to make at least one item from my BurdaStyle magazines each month. It can be anything, I just want to use these patterns. So for the month of February I decided to make 02/2018 #115 cargo skirt. I really liked it in the magazine, but since I decided at the last minute to make this, I had to order the snaps and wait for them to arrive (only took a few days). But I had completed everything up to that point of putting in the snaps.

Here is the picture of the skirt from the magazine .

I really like the print and casual style of this. But because I am also wanting to use the fabric that I have, I used an ivory colored heavy-weight linen for mine.

Mine actually came out more “formal” looking than I intended, but I like this fabric. It’s a good weight for this skirt so it hangs nicely. I would like to make this in a more casual fabric like in the magazine picture.

I also added hem allowance which I think might be included in the BurdaStyle magazine patterns. I couldn’t remember and didn’t bother to check but I also think that this is a good length for me. If I do make this in a more casual-style fabric, I may make it a bit shorter.

As you can see from this picture, the skirt has snaps in the front.

Honestly for this skirt, I did not use all of the snaps that the pattern says to use. After putting these on the front, I had had enough! Snaps are cute and a nice change, but they are also a pain to install (at least for me). So , I didn’t put the snaps on the pockets like the instructions recommend. Now having said that, I do like having the snaps here. They blend in very well and it’s just something different from buttons.

So now I’m off to go work on some more wardrobe staples that I could really use (this skirt is one of them).  I’m working on planning some things for Spring. It may not look like it in these pictures, but it was about 35 degrees outside. I was freezing! But I know Spring will be here before I know it, so I want to get ready.

Have fun sewing everyone!

BurdaStyle Twisty Top

One of my new year’s goals is to really make use of the BurdaStyle magazine patterns. I’ve been a subscriber for years and have made a few things but not enough. I decided that if I’m going to continue to receive that magazine, I had better use it.  I really enjoy reading the magazine and I always pick out a few things that I like in almost every issue. But, I haven’t taken the time to actually MAKE them. So, this year, my goal is to make at least one item from an issue for that month from any year. In other words, as February approaches, I’ve chosen something I want to make from a February issue from 2012. That gives me more options and it’s more fun and less limiting. That being said, I have at least accomplished this for January.

BurdaStyle 01/2018 #102

This is 01-2018 #102. It’s shown in the magazine as athleisure wear which it certainly can be. I made mine using athletic/performance fabric I bought at Joann’s. I made no alterations to the pattern. But, this top is designed well enough that made from a different fabric (they suggest silk jersey), you could wear this for a night out on the town. I love versatile patterns!

You could even make this with short sleeves for warmer weather.

The biggest surprise for me was that this was very easy to make. Anyone who’s ever tried one of their patterns knows that the directions can sometimes be a bit confusing. This was straight-forward.

So it’ll be on to the next project for me and hoping to get a February make done!
