Favorite Skirt-BurdaStyle 09/2010 #106

I first made this skirt around the end of 2010. It quickly became a favorite of mine for a lot of reasons. I loved the corduroy I used which was much like a suede fabric. I also loved the style of it because it was stylish but not too short, etc. It became the perfect thing to wear with boots. I had always intended to make another one but I never did until now.

Because I really liked the look of the previous one I made (you can see that here), I wanted something that would give me the same sort of look and feel. But, it was also important for me to use up some fabric I already had. So, I chose to use this piece of printed moleskin suede. The skirt fabric and lining are both pieces I had on hand.

I know that some of you don’t particularly like to use BurdaStyle Magazine patterns, but I would like to challenge you as I’ve challenged myself on that. There are so many styles I truly love in the magazine and I admit that tracing them can be daunting and sometimes annoying. But I really look at it as part of the whole process of sewing a garment that I want. Whether it’s tracing from the magazine or tracing from one of the Big 4 (yes, I do that about 90% of the time), it has almost become therapeutic for me to do so.

That being said, I had initially chosen to make this skirt because I had figured it would challenge me enough to try something more detailed from them, but wouldn’t be too difficult to put together. Overall, This is a fairly easy project. By the way, the top I’m wearing in the pictures is from the same magazine. It’s 09/2010 #121. This was my very first successful BurdaStyle project completion. It has three pieces! So, if anyone wants a super simple beginner project, that’s the one I recommend.

Let me know what projects you have that challenge you.

We all have them so know that you’re not alone. The only way that I know of to get through those difficult pieces to to keep trying – make the mistakes and learn from them.

February BurdaStyle Skirt Is Done

As you may know, I’m really trying to make at least one item from my BurdaStyle magazines each month. It can be anything, I just want to use these patterns. So for the month of February I decided to make 02/2018 #115 cargo skirt. I really liked it in the magazine, but since I decided at the last minute to make this, I had to order the snaps and wait for them to arrive (only took a few days). But I had completed everything up to that point of putting in the snaps.

Here is the picture of the skirt from the magazine .

I really like the print and casual style of this. But because I am also wanting to use the fabric that I have, I used an ivory colored heavy-weight linen for mine.

Mine actually came out more “formal” looking than I intended, but I like this fabric. It’s a good weight for this skirt so it hangs nicely. I would like to make this in a more casual fabric like in the magazine picture.

I also added hem allowance which I think might be included in the BurdaStyle magazine patterns. I couldn’t remember and didn’t bother to check but I also think that this is a good length for me. If I do make this in a more casual-style fabric, I may make it a bit shorter.

As you can see from this picture, the skirt has snaps in the front.

Honestly for this skirt, I did not use all of the snaps that the pattern says to use. After putting these on the front, I had had enough! Snaps are cute and a nice change, but they are also a pain to install (at least for me). So , I didn’t put the snaps on the pockets like the instructions recommend. Now having said that, I do like having the snaps here. They blend in very well and it’s just something different from buttons.

So now I’m off to go work on some more wardrobe staples that I could really use (this skirt is one of them).  I’m working on planning some things for Spring. It may not look like it in these pictures, but it was about 35 degrees outside. I was freezing! But I know Spring will be here before I know it, so I want to get ready.

Have fun sewing everyone!

The”Kate” Skirt From Angela Wolf Patterns

When I first saw this skirt, I knew it was something I wanted. It’s basically a classic A-line skirt, which I love! This skirt comes in two lengths with two waistband options. I chose to use facing and not add a waistband (the other option is to use a waistband).

I prefer the facing option because I think it gives a cleaner, smoother finish and I can install the zipper up to the edge of the skirt.

I used a piece of polyester suiting fabric that I’ve had for years to make this skirt. Mine is also lined, which is another option that’s included in the pattern.

This, by the way, is the longer version of the skirt. There is a shorted version in the pattern.

This is definitely a skirt that can easily become a wardrobe staple. It’s also the kind of thing that looks good on every woman. I also like it because it was very easy to make. It’s event a great project for a beginner to tackle. I didn’t have to make any alterations or changes to the skirt, but you could do a lot with this pattern (add pockets: in-seam or otherwise, lengthen it for a midi or maxi, use different fabric techniques, etc.).

I think this is the kind of thing that I can make over and over again to come up with something different each time.
