Style Arc Sally Jean Skirt

Here’s a garment I made last summer. It’s the Style Arc Sally Jean Skirt pattern and it is really nice! I’m always a fan of denim skirts in the summer because they are so comfortable, easy to wear and can go with so many different things.

The Pattern

The pattern is described as being slightly A-line, which it is. That’s one of the things I like about it. A-line skirts tend to be flattering on just about every body.

This is available in both PDF and paper formats. And as you can see, it’s rated “Medium” for skill level (intermediate).

How I Made It

I used some leftover white denim fabric I had from this jean jacket project. Having had quite a lot of experience sewing my own jeans, I knew that that’s the approach I would take with the construction of this skirt.

I really like the results I got. But getting there was challenging.

Style Arc Sally Jean Skirt Pros & Cons

There are no cons in terms of the style, sewability or wearability of the pattern. I think the pattern is great for the style and I will definitely be making more. It’s a classic that is just MY style!

My cons all have to do with the pattern instructions. They are more than a little lacking in instruction. There are patten parts that are labeled differently than what’s mentioned in the instructions. There are some terms that are different, but I chock that up to the pattern company being located in Australia (I think). Those things are figureoutable.

I used a regular jean construction method for making the fly front because I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what they were saying -LOL!

I did not use a twin needle for making the two rows of stitching (as they say in the instructions). Personally, I don’t recommend it because denim can be thick and there will be several layers of fabric to go through. That’s an easy way to break a (twin) needle. I just sew two rows with a denim needle.

All that being said, the pattern is great and I will make this again, maybe this summer! Just be prepared to either use other instructions or have enough experience sewing so that you know what to do.

If you’d like to see the video review of the pattern, here it is.

S8994 Project Collaboration

A while back, Myra from Myra Lorraine YouTube channel and I decided it would be fun to take pattern we both liked, make it, and see how each one of us would make it our own. We chose this Simplicity pattern from Mimi G

The first thing I did with this is to lengthen it by 4″. I made a muslin to ensure that the length and the fit were what I wanted. For the first time in my sewing. I also did a full seat adjustment. This was done because I noticed that with the first muslin I made, the skirt road up in the back a bit. So in order to remedy this, I did a slash and spread technique that gave me about another inch in length in the back. The back and the front pieces matched up though.

This is a linen-like fabric I bought years ago at JoAnn’s. It’s washable and super comfortable. It’s the kind of thing that’s great for a summer dress or skirt.

Being in a pandemic situation has presented its own challenges in completing any projects. Covid-19 means no traveling to the fabric store since they were closed here in March. So everything I used were things that I already had at home. Having enough fabric is not really an issue 😂. But there are some other things that I wish I had access to, like matching thread.

But that’s it. You can watch the video I did for this project here and I have linked Myra’s video in the description box as well.

Thanks for watching and Happy Sewing!

My Take on McCall’s 7906

As many of you have seen, this skirt pattern is very popular among sewists and with good reason. It’s stylish, practical (it has pockets) and it’s easy to make. I made View C using a stretch cotton sateen that I fell in love with when I saw it.

In the picture above. I’m wearing it with a self tie belt I made from some leftover fabric I had. This particular version doesn’t have the self tie belt that View D does.

The pockets in the skirt are actually deep enough to be useful (LOVE that).

The only alteration I made to the pattern was to use the size 18 waist and size 16 hip. I really could have just made the 16 I think since the waist is just a bit looser than I would like (YAY me! All that exercise is paying off!).

But here are some other ways I styled this skirt.

Overall, I love this skirt and expect to get a lot of use out of it. The fabric is heavy enough that it’s not see through. This skirt has all the colors I enjoy wearing and should be a fun addition to my wardrobe!
