The Perfect Linen Set

When I saw Simplicity 9270, I knew that the pattern would be terrific to make the perfect linen set. This was a fun project to make because I knew how I wanted to feel when I put it on. Being more intentional about the wardrobe I create is important to me.

The Pattern

As you can see, this is a casual outfit of pants or shorts and a shirt that’s either long sleeve or short sleeve. Another good thing about this is that there are only three buttons, so it’s really easy. The pants are elastic waist which means they are quick to make and very comfortable to wear.

My Linen Set

I made this because I wanted a look that could be casual yet put together without too much effort. Simplicity 9270 made from linen definitely fits the bill for that. Linen isn’t something that I have used very often. In fact, the last garment I made from linen was this blazer (which I absolutely love). In fact, I could probably wear the pants from this set with that blazer.

I bought the fabric online and had no issues with it. It’s a handkerchief linen so it is thin, but not too thin. It’s perfect for summer. And keeping in mind that it’s linen, you know there will be wrinkles. If you are a Seamwork member, you can read this article about working with linen. As far as the construction of the garments are concerned, it’s an easy project. I did take my time so I worked on this for about two weeks. The shirt has no bust darts, so that may be something to keep in mind if you need to make alterations.

For the pants, I made my usual adjustment of raising the front crotch seam about 1/2″. As mentioned, they have elastic waist, in-seam pockets and wide legs. This is a terrific pattern for making a transitional outfit as well. I can see making this again in a more autumnal color and using the longer sleeve shirt.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love my bold colors and floral prints. But I also want to add some more solids and neutrals to my wardrobe as well. This is why I love sewing my own clothes. I can really focus my time and efforts on making those things that I can get the most use out of. In particular, this is an outfit that can be worn in several different ways. I consider this as a lifestyle outfit because it fits so well with the idea I had in my mind of how I want to feel when wearing it.
