My Latest Project As A Minerva Brand Ambassador

For my latest project as a Minerva brand ambassador, I knew exactly what I wanted to make. I had already decided on the skort, but I wanted a matching top as well. This way I have more options and I can wear this like a dress when I choose to.

The Fabric

This is an ITY (interlock twist yarn) knit fabric. If you’ve ever used this type of fabric, you know it’s a stretchy (4-way stretch) knit. This one in particular is very soft. It’s called Floral Jungle and it’s print-on-demand. The color is vibrant and there was no fading when I washed it.

This knit is very easy to work with with no unraveling when cut.

My Project: Skort & Top

I made the skort first and it’s a pattern you’ve seen me use before – Simplicity 9336. Unfortunately, this pattern is no longer available. I really wish they would bring this one back because it’s designed for knits. Some other skort patterns are designed for woven fabrics.

This is perfect for a travel wardrobe, as I’ve used it for that before.

For the top, I used Butterick 6847. This one is actually a reissue of McCall’s 6963. In fact, some of the pictures on the cover are the same… Anyway, a good thing about this pattern is all of the fit information that is included. It’s a Palmer-Pletsch pattern so the pattern tissue includes lines for making a full bust adjustment, shoulder adjustments, etc.

Making this as a matching set gives me more options. I can wear the pieces together and they have the look of a dress. Or I can mix and match with other tops and bottoms. I even had enough fabric leftover to make an additional sleeveless top.

Conclusion

One of the reasons I love sewing my own clothes is to get those things that I want. I think that’s especially important if you’re a person that doesn’t really follow trends. Well, I like to know the trends, but I use that information as inspiration for my sewing. I have so many patterns as well as Burda Style magazines and PDFs that I can make just about any kind of style I want.

Sewing also allows us to fit our garments properly. Buying clothes can be fun, but they don’t always fit like they should (at least for me). I’m glad I have the ability to create or alter to really suit my body and tastes in clothes.
